MEPHISTO TO LUCIFER - SILVIU PURCĂRETE IS DIRECTING "THE TRAGEDY OF MAN" IN TIMISOARA

The famous theatre director Silviu Purcărete is preparing a new performance in Timișoara, rehearsing with the Csiky Gergely Hungarian State Theatre company the text "The Tragedy of Man" by Madách Imre. The opening in scheduled for March 3rd in the Main Hall and this ambitious project is the first prepared for 2023, when Timișoara will be the European Capital of Culture. The artistic team consists of set and costume designer Dragoș Buhagiar, music composer Vasile Șirli and dramaturge Visky András.

Despite being written back in the 19th century, Madách Imre's "The Tragedy of Man" has preserved its freshness and relevance in the contemporary theatre world. After he was banished from Paradise, Adam was accompanied by Lucifer during a voyage through the history of humanity, looking at the deepness of the human soul. Madách's poetic text is one of the essential literary writings of the modern European mind and it was re-written together by Silviu Purcărete and Visky András. The cast of "The Tragedy of Man" brings together our entire theatre company: Aszalos Géza, Balázs Attila, Bandi András Zsolt, Borbély B. Emília, Csábi Anna, Csata Zsolt, Éder Enikő, Kiss Attila, Kocsárdi Levente, Lanstyák Ildikó, Lőrincz Rita, Lukács Szilárd, Magyari Etelka, Mátyás Zsolt Imre, Mihály Csongor, Molnos András Csaba, Szász Enikő, Tar Mónika, Tokai Andrea, Tóth Eszter Nikolett and Vass Richárd.

This version of „The Tragedy of Man" can be regarded as a continuation of Purcarete's "Faust", produced by Sibiu Radu Stanca Theatre, which has gained international success and is still performed 10 years after its premiere. Goethe and Madách wrote 50 years apart, in different stages of the development of modern Europe, separated by the 1848 Revolution. Silviu Purcărete (born in 1950) has won numerous awards in Romania, as well as abroad, his creations were selected for the world's most prestigious festivals. His distinctive artistic style includes grand staging and very minutious productions, attention to detail and creation of impressive characters. In 2014 he directed "Moliendo Cafe", coproduced by "Csiky Gergely" Hungarian State Theatre and the German State Theatre in Timișoara.
