The Hungarian State Theatre Launches a European Project Dedicated to Women's Rights
The first meeting of the European project "FemminiCity - Network of Cities for Women Participation in Policy Making " began in Timișoara, coordinated by the "Csiky Gergely" Hungarian State Theatre. Funded with approximately EUR 300,000 under the "Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values" program - implemented by the European Union through the European Education and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA), the project lasts two years and will be implemented by cultural operators from five countries.
The partners will host artists from the other partner countries to delve deeper into women's rights issues, issues that are important to the local community. The performances will be produced with the participation of professional and amateur actors, all productions to be presented at festivals organized by the project in 2026. Amongst the themes launched as potential topics for the following productions: obstetric violence, sexual freedom and education, abortion rights, women's political representation, domestic violence and femicide, gender pay gap, economic rights. The other five partners, beneficiaries of the project coordinated by the "Csiky Gergely" Hungarian State Theatre in Timișoara, are Stowarzyszenie Kobietostan (Poland), Drustvo ZIZ (Slovenia), Paul-Valéry University of Montpellier 3 (France), Fondacija Novi Sad – Evropska Prestonica Kulture (Serbia) and Trupa Drz ne daj (Serbia).
Integral part of each performance will be a dialogue with the audience, with each performance to be followed by a discussion. As well within the project, a conference on women's rights will be organized and a documentary about the process of working on the performances in the project will be released. For the entire project, the organizers expect approximately 150 direct participants and over 5,000 indirect participants. Reflecting real problems in society, the artistic productions in the project highlight social problems that can be remedied with the participation of the authorities – through more efficient public policies. Thus, besides artistic value, the performances will also be pretexts to discuss the sore points in society and to identify solutions together with the organizations and individuals in key positions, who will be invited through the project.
The training organized this week in Timisoara aims to schedule artistic residencies, premieres and festivals, as well as clarify the working methodology. The "Csiky Gergely" Hungarian State Theatre in Timisoara expresses its confidence that this project will contribute to the promotion of gender equality and the creation of inclusive policies, with sustainable positive effects on the communities involved.
