Shakespeare’s Pericles will be staged in Timisoara by a British artistic team

The Csiky Gergely Hungarian State Theatre in Timișoara is working on Shakespeare’s Pericles, which will open on March 8th 2024 in the Main Hall. The head of the artistic team is Philip Parr, director of the York International Shakespeare Festival, UK, an expert in William Shakespeare’s work.

The Hungarian Theatre’s company is currently rehearsing with Jane Streeton, vocal coach at Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, Royal Shakespeare Company and Juilliard. The collaboration with Jane Streeton for Pericles brings a new approach for the younger actors of our company who will also sing in the performance. Streeton co-authored Singing on Stage: An Actor's Guide, she was an opera singer and constantly honours invitations to work with theatre and film actors. The music score for Pericles was composed by Cári Tibor, who is the most active composer for theatre music in Romania. The concept for the show’s choreography belongs to young artist Anca Stoica.

The set design and costumes were created by Brian D. Hanlon from UK, lecturer at Liverpool Performing Arts Institute. Hanlon has collaborated with theatres in UK and abroad (including a street performance for the Craiova International Shakespeare Festival), but he also created large-scale puppets and installations for open-air events such as Manchester Day Parade or Liverpool Pride.

The cast of Pericles is: Aszalos Géza, Balló Helga, Bandi András Zsolt, Borbély B. Emília, Czüvek Loránd, Éder Enikő, Erdős Bálint, Hegyi Kincső, Jancsó Előd, Kiss Attila, Kocsárdi Levente, Lajter Márkó Ernesztó, Lőrincz Rita, Magyari Etelka, Mátyás Zsolt Imre, Molnos András Csaba, Tar Mónika, Vadász Bernadett and Vajda Boróka.

The director Philip Parr and dramaturge Dálnoky Réka are working on a modernised version of the play Pericles, prince of Tyre (printed in 1609), which will include current relevant themes such as migration and human trafficking. The play enjoyed great success when it was first staged in the 17th century, even though it was not entirely written by William Shakespeare.

Ticket sales will begin soon. Pericles will be performed in Hungarian with English and Romanian surtitles.
