Season Finale at the "Csiky Gergely" Hungarian State Theater: A Full Year on the Anniversary of 70 Years of Activity

The troupe of the Hungarian Theater from Timișoara says goodbye to its local audience tomorrow, June 20, with the show "Birds", directed by Kokan Mladenović. The event will take place in the Great Hall, at 7 p.m., followed by the traditional meeting with subscribers, for a brief review of the ending season.

Through the seven premieres staged, this season revolved around a few performance-events and by strengthening the educational component of the Hungarian Theatre's program. The co-production with Teatrul Clasic "Ioan Slavici" from Arad, "boyz and girlz", directed by Ármin Ricz, based on the text by Sînziana Koenig, talks about teenagers who live under the pressure of expectations and models from social media. The show had around 20 performances in Timișoara high schools, followed by discussions with young people. "The Memory Menders", directed by Szabó Attila, reinforces the theater education program, inviting mainly 8-12 year olds to an interactive and cooperative game. Still in the young viewers section, the non-verbal show "Mamma Badu's Children" reflects, through play, the different ways in which parents express their love towards their children.

"1978", directed by Tomi Janežič, is about Romania in the 70s and is based on the personal stories of the actors and the director from the communist period. The show takes place in the space of the former Department of Hydrotechnical Engineering in Timișoara and has enjoyed wide recognition on a national level, being twice nominated for the Uniter Awards, but also internationally, being invited to Nova Gorica, the European Capital of Culture in 2025. "Pericles", directed by Philip Parr, premiered on March 8th, exposing in a colorful setting an incredible life story that, paradoxically, can be anyone's story. In the same constant tone of the season, which combines (or contrasts) the emotional and the pragmatism of everyday life, the "Caucasian Chalk Circle", based on the text of Bertolt Brecht, directed by Harsányi Zsolt, brought to the fore the complexity of the human soul and the incompatibility between human nature and social rules. The last premiere of the season, "Danaos", directed by Szabó Kristóf, takes up, using the plot of the Aeschylian play "The Supplicants", the ever-present subject of the refugee, in an oppressive but aesthetically vibrant season finale, which questions faith in one's own culture, in one's own god and in one's own humanity.

In addition to the premieres, the Theater had 13 performances from the old repertoire, and the audience loyalty program brought 94 KultCard subscribers. The most important event of the season was in December, with the celebration of 70 years of institutional existence of the Hungarian theater troupe in Timișoara - a good time to reminisce with former colleagues about the successes of the theater and the challenges overcome over the years.

The Euroregional Theater Festival Timișoara – TESZT had its 15th successful edition, with the selection of 20 troupes from 11 countries, who came up with bold performances, all with a common denominator: a fresh approach to contemporary theatre. Complementarily, the Theater co-organized the second edition of the Festival of Hungarian Theaters in Bucharest - Bukfeszt and the fourth edition of the Festival of Hungarian Theaters in Transylvania - MAFESZT.

At the end of June, the Theater has two trips to Hungary with the show "Caravaggio", directed by Visky Andrej. This summer's vacation will be interrupted by the July 31 trip to Gyula with "Birds", and the theater's activity will resume in fall, with the seventh theaterGAMES sports edition, where people in the cultural field will be able to test their skills in 11 sports: tennis, table tennis, fencing (baranta), cycling, athletics (running, shot put, long jump), streetball, dragonboat, beach volleyball, badminton, football and chess.

The "Csiky Gergely" Hungarian State Theater from Timișoara wishes you a peaceful summer and is looking forward to seeing you again this fall with new cultural challenges, where else but at... the theater.
