1978, nominated for Best performance at the Romanian Theatre Union Gala

The Csiky Gergely Hungarian State Theatre in Timișoara is glad to announce that its production 1978, directed by Tomi Janežič, was nominated by the Romanian Theatre Union for two categories: Best theatre performance in 2023 and Best set design for theatre in 2023 (author: Branko Hojnik).

1978 premiered on December 7th 2023 and it takes place in the former Hydrotechnics Faculty of the Polytechnic University – on 32 Ghirodei Road, a building which was selected and adapted especially for this theatre production. Starting from the everyday life of a family in communist Romania, the multimensional story joins several narrative threads in multiple timelines throughout history. How could be Franz Jozsef linked to a small boy writing an essay to honour Ceaușescu? The narrative lines meet and overlap in a story about several generations who are transferring trauma, joy and pieces of stories too painfull to be told. 1978 is the first production directed by Slovenian author Tomi Janežič in Romania, after multiple invitations to take part in the Euroregional Theatre Festival  TESZT, organised by the Hungarian Theatre in Timisoara.

The rooms hosting the three acts were reconfigured like time and space capsules, so that the spectator gets immersed in the 1970s, 2020s and the First World War. With our partners from the Polytechnic University, the Theatre’s team and set designer Branko Hojnik managed to transform the building into an unique theatrical space, which is now part of the city’s cultural circuit.

The cast of 1978 is made of: Balázs Attila, Borbély B. Emília, Czüvek Loránd, Jancsó Előd, Kiss Attila, Lajter Márkó Ernesztó, Mátyás Zsolt Imre, Simó Emese, Szőllősi Eszter and Vajda Boróka. The script was written by Tomi Janežič and Simona Semenič, including personal stories told by the actors of the Hungarian Theatre.

Tomi Janežič (b.1972) is one of the most successful and admired European theatre directors, he teaches at Ljubljana University and his productions received awards at many important festivals. His aesthetic creed is one of the strongest and most original directions in contemporary theatre, blending lyricism and difficult subjects and using psychodrama during rehearsals. 1978 is just one of 12 performances with the same theme, created for the Cultural Programme of Gorizia/Nova Gorica 2025 European Cultural Capital.

The performance is scheduled on March 17th and March 27th (World Theatre Day) from 5 pm. Translation to Romanian and English is possible via surtitles and the transfer from the city center to the venue is provided by the theatre. Tickets are available online on https://ticket.tm-t.ro/ro or the theatre’s ticket office Monday to Friday 1-7 p.m.
